The ultimate guide to Decatur’s fun and free attractions

Free activities abound in Decatur, rated as one of the best places to live in the Metro Atlanta area. Take a sneak peek at the things you can do in the city without spending a penny.

  1. Enjoy music at Concerts on the Square.

Leave your Saturday evenings free this coming May to experience the full range of what the Concerts on the Square have to offer. Set up a picnic on a cool spring night and soak in the sounds of bluegrass, jazz, and more.

Concerts on the Square 2019 will take place on the following dates: May 4, 11, 18, and 25 at 7:00 PM in Decatur’s town square. Lineup of performances will be announced in this page.

  2. Ride a bike and look for fairy doors.

Did you know that Decatur is home to a small community of fairies? Wouldn’t that be absolutely amazing if it were real? Thankfully, some of Decatur’s local artists have taken it upon themselves to bring a little magic in the community.

Scattered in the city are over 30 secret doors (or “fairy doors”) inspired by a similar movement that started about a century ago. Finding all of them would be like going on a treasure hunt, so invite friends and loved ones to join your search.

  3. Listen to good music and experience genuine Decatur hospitality at the Oakhurst Porchfest.

Now on its fourth year, the Oakhurst Porchfest is unlike any music festival you have attended. Purely “crowdfunded,” the Porchfest is a free event in which the whole turnout depends on the generosity of community members.

You can offer your porch as a stage, or sign up as a performer and share your music with strangers. Additionally, you can enlist as a volunteer to help set up the whole event and make sure it goes smoothly.

Oakhurst Porchfest is also open to enterprising individuals who would like to sell food and drinks during the event. So if you would like to earn some additional income instead of spending cash on refreshments, this could be an opportunity. Read more about it here.

  4. Attend the Decatur Book Festival.

The AJC Decatur Book Festival is an annual event that is completely open to the public for free. If you are a bookworm, attending would be a great opportunity to meet new writers and have your copies signed by your favorite author.

The festival includes a wide variety of activities, including a panel discussion featuring authors, book signing sessions, seminars with authors, as well as a marketplace where you can purchase books and other products.

The Decatur Book Festival is usually held in Downtown Decatur. This year, it will take place on August 30 to September 1, 2019. For more information, click here.
